What Can Churches Do About the Situation in Afghanistan?

Many of us will have been watching the news with horror and dread as we saw the advance of the Taliban following the pulling out of American troops in Afghanistan this week.

In partnership with WELCOME CHURCHES, Krish Kandiah has called Christian leaders to come together to respond to the crisis. Several church leaders in Northampton have met this week to seek to co-ordinate our efforts through the WECOME CHURCHES network. Emmanuel has joined this network to form part of the local team here.

What can all of us do?

Open our eyes and open our hearts. Stay informed, watch the news and allow your heart to be moved.

Pray for the people of this nation that everything possible will be done to alleviate suffering and to provide safe refuge for those fleeing from the Taliban.

Give to the work of Welcome Churches as they seek to respond to this crisis by welcoming those fleeing their homeland.

Think and consider what you might give to those relocated. Good quality shoes, winter clothes, baby equipment, smartphones. All might be needed. At this stage, look around your home and think about what you can give. And watch this space.

Book in for Welcome Churches Afghan Welcomer training which will help you to be engaged and to contribute in sensitive, culturally appropriate ways.
